Wealth and political impact of the free city Nuernberg around 1500 are particularly based on its rank as medieval trading centre. Often the traders of Nuernberg were called "moneybags” at that time. From 1495 to 1525, years of prosperity, political power and the atmosphere of intellectual and artistic advance made Nuernberg one of Europe's leading metropolises. The merchants of Nuernberg were promoted by several imperial privileges since 13th and 14th century. The merchants reached monopoly position in trading with saffron, copper and metalware. The ancient patrician families used their political influence to organise and arrange their commercial transactions in family enterprises. Some of theses enterprises still exist as foundations today.
